The finacial bail out that was not

Posted on September 29, 2008 at 10:15 pm         By Ryan in Investing | Disclaimer

Well today was an interesting one on capital hill.  The “bailout” legislation was voted down by a very thin margin.  I am torn on this particular outcome.
I firmly believe that our markets need something.  I don’t think that the plan put forth by the treasury secretary was  that great.  I am very concerned that [...]

Leadership Core Series

Posted on September 27, 2008 at 10:26 pm         By Ryan in Business School

This afternoon I spent the day at the downtown campus attending the first session of the Leadership Core Series (LCS).
The day was divided into two sessions, one on negotiations and the other on teamwork.  The focus on the day was leveraging experiential learning to quickly gain a broad understanding of the two topics.  Obviously covering [...]

“A Memo Found in the Street”

Posted on at 7:10 pm         By Ryan in Investing | Disclaimer

If you are not aware of the crisis confronting our financial markets, you must be living under a rock.
Take a look at this little piece of work from Barry Ritholz: http://bigpicture.typepad.com/comments/2008/09/uncle-sam-the-e.html
It’s a fantastic look at some of the underlying root causes in our regulatory system that caused this mess.  Granted, the blame should not go [...]

Kellogg, week one is done.

Posted on September 25, 2008 at 4:32 pm         By Ryan in Business School

Let me just say again that Kellogg is a fantastic business school.  This week marks my first two classes in my three year(ish) journey to a Kellogg MBA.  This quarter I’m taking Business Strategy and Accounting.  My goal was to get a quant and qual course at that same time to balance out the workload [...]

The fall of WaMu

Posted on at 4:17 pm         By Ryan in Investing | Disclaimer

Tonight’s news that the FDIC is taking over Washington Mutual, then immediately selling all of its assets to JP Morgan Chase is just insane.
Now, we all know that WaMu was a failure waiting to happen.  The bank had some huge issues and was having an extremely difficult time finding a buyer to help it out.  [...]

Upgrade…

Posted on at 9:42 pm         By Ryan in Web Development

Somebody shoot me.
This evening I decided to do the quick 5 minute upgrade to the blog.  Don’t ever do that without fully understanding how your software works.  I’ve recently switched from FileZilla to Transmit… after tonight I’m switching back.
If you noticed that the site was down for about 2 hours, it’s because I didn’t do [...]

Registration and Orientation

Posted on September 7, 2008 at 6:25 pm         By Ryan in Business School

Well, I’m absolutely sure that Kellogg was the right choice.
This past Friday and Saturday I spent the day in downtown Chicago and Evanston respectively. On Friday the PTMBA program kicked off registration and a general review of the program.
We started the day simply going over the process and learning how registration will work going [...]

Update on Life in IL

Posted on September 2, 2008 at 9:20 am         By Megan in Barr Family Blog

So in Ryan’s last “update” post, he mentioned that the move combined with the pregnancy had led me to catch “some kind of bug.”  Well it turns out that a bug actually caught me, and gave me West Nile Virus!  I started feeling very tired the Saturday after we arrived, and that night began what [...]

The journey to a Kellogg MBA is about to finally begin! I’ve received all of my Registration materials from the University and will trek down to Evanston this coming Friday. I’ll have a chance to meet with my fellow Fall 2008 classmates and get a few classes ready to go.
Based upon the schedule [...]
